Vera "Ms.
Vera Mae" Fields Roberts
Oct 8, 1939 — Jun 22, 2025
On October 8, 1939, a beautiful baby girl was born to Jessie "Joe" Fields and Sallie Mae Spillman in Waskom, Texas. An only child, Vera, was a shining light from the very beginning.
She received her early education in DeBerry, Texas, and later earned her GED from Panola College. Vera furthered her education at Kilgore College, where she obtained her Dietician License. She dedicated much of her life to caring for others, working for over 19 years at Panola Nursing Home, more than 10 years at Panola College, and eventually retiring from the Winker House.
Vera was united in marriage to Rev. James L. Roberts and remained devoted until his passing. She later found love again with Clyde Deramus, and their bond continued until his passing as well. Through both loves, Vera showed unwavering faith, strength, and grace.
Family was everything to Vera. She loved spending time with them, cooking hearty meals, solving word puzzles, traveling, and watching game shows. Her words of wisdom and warm presence were constant in the lives of those who knew her. She often shared her three guiding principles for a long and meaningful life: Love the Lord, Do God's Will, and Live a Clean Life — values she truly lived by.
Vera was a faithful servant, choir member, and cherished member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev J.T. Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents, both of her beloved husbands, her daughter Lynda Gardner, and her grandson Traveon Miller.
She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory: One son, Jimmy Fields, Two daughters, Brenda Esekody (Marcus) and Janet Roberts (Steve), a bonus daughter, Tresa McMillian-Hampton (Quincy). Nine grandchildren: Quentin, Ashlee, Jerry Jr., Chris, Alecia, Treauda, Kirston, Ja'Marcus, and Da'Auna, Seven great-grandchildren, Denver, Jaiden, Jerrion, Josiah, Makenzie, Londell, Jousha, Caylin, her favorite first cousin, Sallie Arwine along with a host of extended family and dear friends.
