Obituary

Sonja Russell was born on July 25, 1966, in Dallas, Texas, to her loving parents Martha Russell and A.J. Lovings. Sonja was best known for her radiant style, infectious laugh, and many cherished years at Lady Magic Beauty Shop.

After graduating from James Madison High School, Sonja began her career in cosmetology alongside her dear friend Mary Nash in the late 1980s. Through her work, she became a part of the Magic family, started her own family, and formed lasting friendships that stood the test of time.

Following her departure from the shop in the late 2000s, Sonja pursued higher education at Phoenix University, where she earned her Associate of Arts degree. She later joined the Dallas Independent School District, where she worked first as a cafeteria worker and later as a school bus driver. During this time, she continued to learn, earned her CDL, built friendships with fellow drivers, and celebrated the retirement of her good friend Gracie Ward from the district.

Sonja will be lovingly remembered for her joyful spirit and love of karaoke, dancing, her black Folgers coffee, and her "lucky numbers" she enjoyed playing in the Texas Lottery.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories (3) loving daughters: Brianna Russell, Shaunja Russell (Antwanek) and Taylor Griffin; her devoted mother, Martha Russell; (2) sisters: Kenya Russell and Nicky Lovings; (1) brother, Keith Lovings; (2) uncles: Robert James Russell and Anthony Whitmill; (1) niece, Jordan Russell as well as a host of cousins and friends.

Everyone who met Sonja knew her as a kindhearted and genuine soul. She built connections that lasted a lifetime and created a loving village that will miss her dearly. She was, and will forever be, a daughter, sister, niece, friend, and mother.

Rest in eternal peace, Sonja.
