Obituary

Ruthie Epperson was born August 8th 1935, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Ruthie, "Ruth," as she is so lovingly called by her family, is the first born of 12 children to the union of the late John Lewis Rowlett "Grandpa" and Mattie Mae Rowlett "Nanny". Ruth was raised with deep-rooted faith in Jesus. She unwaveringly committed to spreading love and kindness to everyone she encountered. She was well liked mostly due to her positive energy. She possessed strong values, was big on manners and doing things the right way. Ruth received her formal education from Rockwall Independent School District before her family moved to Dallas, Texas.

She met and was united in marriage to Therman Earl Edwards Sr., with whom she had a son. Although their marriage did not endure she held a beautiful lifelong relationship with him until his death. She was a gentle, unassuming woman with a sly sense of humor, notoriously frugal with herself and graciously generous with others.  Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and fostering a loving environment. She enthusiastically embraced her family especially nieces and nephews whom she cherished dearly. She especially loved babies. She had the extraordinary gift for nurturing deep, lasting relationships with those around her which included spending a considerable amount of time on the phone chit chatting and giving seasoned advice. She enjoyed preparing meals and being an outstanding homemaker. She didn't miss when it came to anything she made homemade from fried chicken, to pancakes to ice cream. Meals were eagerly anticipated by family and friends alike. Ruth loved music, it flowed throughout her house on any given day. Her home was always open, serving as a gathering place for family and friends. Ruth's love for nurturing things was evident in her beautiful garden which she tended to for decades, to the way she cared for her elderly clients.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in glory by her husband, Frank D. Epperson, one son, Therman Earl Edwards Jr; three brothers: Billy D. Rowlett, Joe L. Rowlett, Edward Tisby; five sisters:  Luella Walker, Betty Hogg, Brenda Ann Perry, Eula Mae Taylor, and Debra Sands.

Ruth married Frank Epperson in 1961 in Los Angeles, CA. They lived there for over 20 years. She was a devoted mother to Therman Earl Edwards Jr. and later a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother to Vidal Edwards, Jeremy Edwards, Vakhara Talton, Rakhara Edwards and Kamen Edwards and great-grandchildren: Weston, Ryan, Lamar, Major, Lola and Kiamani. On any given late night their house would be filled with music, laughter and the smell of something delicious being cooked up and perhaps an out-of-state relative. Being the matriarch of her family she was firm on family harmony maintaining a solid family unit. She had a rare gift for making others smile and laugh, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed her beautiful path. she also leaves behind to cherish her memory (2) sisters: Mattie Stafford, Annett Rowlett and brother John L. Rowlett Jr.

In 1995, after both fully retiring Ruth and Frank moved back to Texas settling in their DeSoto suburb. She was proud to be a Texan again and loved living nearby her family whom visited often which was such a gift for her. Family get-togethers for holidays or simply any occasion delighted her the more were the merrier. In 2015, Ruth moved again this time back to Los Angeles, California with her beloved dog Angel in tow where she lived with her granddaughter Rakhara for 7 years. During this time she took an active role and was able to spend a considerable amount of time with three of her grandchildren Lamar, Major and Lola who adored her dearly. She dotted on them and always emphasized how children were "so enjoyable". They loved cooking with her, making her laugh and playing with her dog which she guarded like a hawk. During this time she remained active by traveling, reading her books, singing along to music and lots of self-care. She especially loved getting her nails done and massages. Ruth enjoyed her time with friends, caregivers and extended family. This was a golden time she was delightful and simply a pleasure to be around. She touched anyone's heart who was fortunate to be graced with her presence. Ruth had incredible patience, and always made time to nurture and help others it is who she was.

Ruth passed away at the age of 90 peacefully on October 26th 2025. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of many. We ask that you remember her not for the way her life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Although Ruth's physical presence may no longer grace our lives, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us with enough beautiful memories to fill our lifetime. May her memory be a blessing, and may we carry forth her legacy of love and compassion in all that we do.
