Octavia
Mauldin
May 15, 1932 — Sep 26, 2023
Octavia Mauldin was born on May 15, 1932 to William T. Hester and Mary H. Robinson-Hester who preceded her in death. She was affectionally known by her family and friends as "Too Sweet". She attended Dunbar Elementary School in Tyler, Texas.
At the age of 18, she married Thurston Mauldin. She was the loving mother to nine children: Frankie, Ruthie, Shirley, Ora, Kenneth, Melvin, Robbie, Audrey and Johnny. Her life was shaped by one of her favorite song, "I won't Complain." Her love of God was expressed daily in her quiet mannerism.
Octavia was an extraordinarily wise woman and mother who loved her children, family members and friends unconditionally. She was a strong mentor to her first cousin, Claudine Blanton, and her loving nieces, Ethel Jewel Foster and Dorothy Jean Session.
Her daughter, Robbie Ann, along with Robbie's two precious daughters, Alexis and Princess, provided exceptional care for Octavia for many years. They were there by her side during her entire stay at Methodist Charlton Hospital, where she passed away on September 26, 2023. Octavia's son Johnny along with all of her daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren were the beams that lit up her eyes.
Octavia Positively impacted the lives of many children in the small community of Gastonia, Texas, where she lived for many years after leaving Tyler. She would often allow her children's friends to visit and stay for extended period of time treating them as her own. This positivity continued at New Independent Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the sanctuary choir up until her illness. She will always be remembered by the choir and church as Mother Mauldin.
She was preceded in death by her husband Thurston Mauldin, (3) children: Audrey, Kenneth and Melvin, her loving parents, (7) brothers and (4) sisters and some grandchildren.
Octavia leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness to her loving siblings: Maxine Hunt and Willie Mumphrey (Brenda); (5) daughters: Frankie (Oscar), Ruthie, Shirley (Bernard), Ora (Billy) and Robbie Ann; (1) son Johnny along with a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Her presence will be deeply missed, but her kind and loving spirit will forever live in the hearts of those who loved her dearly.
