Obituary

Curtis "Red" Daniel Hordge Sr. was born on September 14, 1940, in Waskom, Texas, to Samuel and Jasi Hordge. The youngest son of their union, Curtis attended Waskom ISD before proudly serving four years in the United States Air Force.

After his military service, Curtis held various jobs until a family member experienced a house fire. His natural intelligence and determination helped guide her through the claims process, an experience that led him to a life-changing opportunity. Following a conversation with the owner of RG Beneke Company, he was hired on the spot. Starting as a city print delivery truck driver, Curtis quickly rose through the ranks to become a full-time Public Insurance Adjuster.

In 1969, Curtis made history as the first Black Public Insurance Adjuster in the State of Texas. His groundbreaking achievement broke racial barriers and paved the way for fair representation for all communities in property claims.

Curtis lived a vibrant life filled with diverse hobbies. He enjoyed playing pool, watching boxing, and both competitive and casual bowling. A devoted sports fan, he followed the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks. He also had a passion for drag racing, which led him to purchase his own race car, proudly named "The Adjuster."

Curtis gave his life to Christ in 2017 and became a faithful member of God's Vision Baptist Church in Big Rock, Texas.

On June 7, 1963, Curtis married the love of his life, Linda Jean Abrams, in Dallas, Texas. Together, they built a beautiful legacy over 62 years of marriage, raising five children. Curtis was also blessed with three additional children. Their family grew to include 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. And a host of loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Jasi Hordge; his eldest daughter, Beverly Hill; four brothers; We Johnson, Johnell Johnson, Buddy Hordge, Timon Hordge, three sisters; Bernice Roberson, Theresa Robinson, Mary Alice Webb and many other beloved relatives.

Curtis is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Hordge; two sons: Cedric D. Hordge and Curtis D. Hordge (Carol);  five daughters: Charlot D. Phillips, Corinne D. Fields, Cherone D. Jackson (Kevin), Cassandra Jones (John), and Tonya Jones; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends that will miss him dearly.

Curtis "Red" Daniel Hordge Sr. will be remembered as a trailblazer, a man of deep faith, and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the family he cherished.
